Fleet Town Colts 1 v 0 Camberley Town
Sitting at either end of the table, these two teams met for the third time after two very evenly contested 2-2 draws in the league. Whilst both sides are capable of playing some great football, the league doesn’t lie over the duration of the season and Fleet must of been seen as the under dogs. And so the scene was set for a great Cup Final, it had everything. From the kick off, both sides enjoyed plenty of possession and created a few chances to take the lead but both keepers held firm. First major chance fell to Fleet as Danny and Mathew worked a few one two’s in the left corner, Danny’s cross was met by Dan H and as he span the defender his looping shot was well saved by the Camberley keeper.
Camberley then started turning up the heat, a lot of their approach play was down the their left and Ben R was rapidly becoming our busiest player and he dealt with it well.
Then from one such attack, Ben R was jockeying the man with the ball and then from what appeared to be an ‘off the ball incident’ close by in the box prompted the Ref to blow for a penalty. decision. So up stepped the lad in red and white to face Alex in goal. Cometh the moment, cometh the man, hit with pace down to Alex’s left, you will not see a better penalty save than this. How he got down that quick to save with both hands and contain the ball in his arms, only he knows.
From then on, you knew Alex was more than up for this game having spent a couple of months out injured. Camberley were now really growing in confidence, not allowing Fleet any time on the ball as they pressed every Fleet pass and were first to every second ball. Camberley were in full flow as Alex had to dash out quick twice in succession to clear the now rampant Camberley front line.
With half time approaching, Fleet managed to steady the ship a little and became the more creative side but it was the final ball letting them down.
Half Time 0 v 0
In to the second half and Fleet were guilty of some sloppy defending, the striker crept in but thankfully nestled his shot ‘on’ the roof of the net and not ‘in’ it. Ten minutes in and it was all Camberley as all Fleet offered was the occasional counter attack. In truth, Camberley should of taken the lead when a massive defensive blunder allowed the striker in but somehow he blasted wide.
Fleet were getting very few chances to even test the keeper now, but one chance did go begging as Olly put Chris through in on the keeper but a bad last touch allowed the defender in with a last ditch block before Chris pulled the trigger.
In another rare Fleet attack, Lewis won a free kick just on the edge of the box and we watched Kai send it agonisingly inches over the bar. There simply was no let up from Camberley now, they were coming at Fleet from all angles with corners, crosses and far to many senseless free kicks awarded outside the Fleet area. But every time, Alex was there to pluck the ball out the air or punch clear. Then with some quick thinking, he launched the ball down field and Fleet managed to force a corner. Kai to take and he sort of scuffed it a little which caught Camberley off guard, the ball flicked up off the first defender and looked like it was going out for another corner but Jamie reacted first to head the ball back across goal for Lewis to pounce and smash home putting Fleet 1-0 up and commit legal daylight robbery as Camberley looked stunned.
he game exploded and it went from one end to the other as Lewis nearly doubled Fleet’s lead but his bad touch allowed the keeper to collect. Alex was then bought in to action again as he saved point blank with a brave dash out to block a certain goal. With barely a minute left on the clock, a shot that looked destined for the top left was calmly collected out of the air by Alex.
Full Time 1 v 0
A tense but thrilling game that saw Fleet ride their luck and did well to win, its true they weren’t at their best but they defended resolutely for the entire game and Camberley made it tough for them throughout, so accolades to them. It was also no surprise when the SPL officials awarded Alex as their Man of the Match, you won’t witness a better goalkeeping display at this age group.
