Introduction

This is a brief guide for all newcomers to Fleet Town Colts (FTC) and explains the key points you need to know as you become part of the club.

More detailed information can be found in the ‘Football Development through the age groups’ and ‘Coaches handbook’, both of which are available on request.

Football for Year ‘R’ (U5@ 1 September 2010)

General: These sessions are an introduction to football for beginners and involve basic ball skills, lots of running, shooting, dribbling etc.

Location: Calthorpe Park (next to the tennis courts). You can park at the Fleet Town FC football ground (off Crookham Road) and walk along the path directly outside the car park entrance on the left.

Time: Saturday Mornings, 10.15am to 11.15am, 4th September 2010 to 30th April 2011.

Cost: The cost is £3 per child per session.

Basic Requirements: Children can wear any football kit / tracksuits etc, but boots, shin pads and drinks are essential.

Contact: The Head Coach is Phil O'Hara with assistance from Paul Millerick

Notes for Parents: Parents must not leave their children to go shopping etc, in case there is an accident / emergency etc. Parents must remain at the ground, but can of course make use of ‘Danny’s Place’ (by the tennis courts) for food / refreshments.

The coach needs parents to help, otherwise training is simply not possible – one coach cannot set everything up and look after 30 to 50 children on his own.

Therefore:
  • Please arrive a few minutes early to help carry all the kit from the locker behind Danny’s Place, and help set it up in line with the coach’s wishes.
  • A volunteer will be required to collect the weekly subs and register player names and parent contact details.
  • Volunteers are required to look after small groups of c.10 children (with guidance from the Head Coach).
  • Please help collect the kit at the end of the session and help return it to the locker behind Danny’s Place.

Those parents thinking about managing / coaching a team in the future should highlight this to the Head Coach (see ‘Manager / Coach Information later’).

Year ‘1’ (U6 @ 1 September 2010)

September 2010 to January / February 2011: The children will continue to train at the same time as the Year R’s as per the details on the previous page. However, they will be segregated into their own age groups / ability where possible. It is essential that parents volunteer to manage / coach the groups at this stage.

January / February 2011 to May 2011: The year 1’s will be split into squads of around 10 children per squad. The squads will start to do their own training with their manager and coach, albeit at the same location and time on Saturday mornings. The manager and coach will be encouraged to set up a few friendly 7-a-side matches (called mini soccer) against local opposition towards the end of the season on a convenient Sunday morning.

At this point, all children must officially register as FTC players and complete the FTC registration form – there will be a charge of £50 for the remainder of the season (i.e. the £3 per week is no longer payable). The club will supply each child a FTC football kit and provide training equipment such as goals, balls, cones, bibs etc to the manager / coach.

If there are no volunteers to manage / coach at this stage, then there can be no squad(s).

Next Steps

The next step is Year ‘2’ . This is where the squad(s) formed during Year 1 will be fully run by the manager and coach of that team. The squads will continue to train on a Saturday morning and enter the Surrey Primary League (SPL) where matches takes place on a Sunday morning, although all matches are ‘friendlies’ / ‘non competitive’.   For information, FTC runs sides all the way up to youth level within the Surrey Primary League

Manager / Coach Information

Prospective managers and coaches need to understand the level of commitment required to carry out these roles. Some considerations are:

  • Managers and coaches decide between themselves how they wish to divide the responsibilities of running the squad etc.
  • Managers and coaches are required to complete the FA Level 1 coaching badge which is paid for by FTC.
  • Manager meetings are held every 2 months. Either the manager or coach (or both) of each squad should aim to attend these meetings.
